People been wanting more paranormal talk around here. Alien stuff is some of my favorite of the unexplained. Anyone around ever seen a UFO? Have a few friends who have stories about spotting them. Nothing about being abducted or anything like that though.

Lot of documented UFO sightings in the airforce, seems like every few years I hear about more of that stuff getting declassified. UFOs seem to be a real thing, but don't know if we'll get solid evidence on exactly what they are in our lifetimes.


Given how many earthlike planets there are out there and how we seem to find more evidence of potential life even on harsh planets like Mars there is probably a lot of life on other planets. Maybe not super intelligent life, but life.

Have you heard of the great filter theory? Some scientists say there are so many of these planets and there is so much potential for life that there are bound to be other intelligent species out there. But why haven't they made contact? The great filter theory is that there is something that these species typically reach that holds them back from doing so. Some technologic hurdle or random event that often causes mass extinction before that. This could be a lot of things - the potential for nuclear weapons to cause mass extinction, asteroid strikes, industrial pollutants, something we have not even encoutered yet, or simply the difficulty of achieving faster than light travel. Space is big.

Another theory is that the universe is still relatively young. That we are one of the first spacefaring races to appear, potentially even the first. Who knows, interesting stuff to think about.

Another theory I like about space is about dark matter. Dark matter is basically stuff in the universe that has gravity and blocks out the stars. We don't know what it is. A theory that is possible but that I don't hear much is that the universe is actually star wars level crowded with spacefaring races that leave us alone the way we leave alone some uncontacted amazon tribes. And dark matter is us seeing spaceships, space stations, and planets that are obscured by cloaking devices. Maybe one day we will get a probe out to some dark matter to see what happens, but not sure that will happen in our lifetimes.

A UFO doesn't have to mean aliens, it's just someting unidentified. Whether someone will connect it to aliens depends more on what they already believe before seeing the phenomenon then on what they see.

Somewhere last winter I was cycling to work in the early morning and saw a light silently moving through the sky. Definately not a plane, not a drone and not a regular shooting star. That evening I joked to my wife that I'd seen a UFO.

Later that week by coincidence I saw an article about some unusual meteor or comet (or whatever the correct term for that specific one was), so it was no longer unidentified. If I was into alien stuff I might've explained the phenomenon as an alien spacecraft up till then.

Point is: a UFO is, by definition, something unidentified and connecting it to alien life shouldn't be done quickly as you don't even have much information about a phenomenon (or else you would've known what it is). It makes more sense to me to just admit that you've seen something of which you don't know what it is and leave it at that. Of all the possible explanations of lights in the sky, alien spacecrafts are the more unlikely ones.

Maybe that's a bit of a boring opinion for this thread.

That's very fair, I almost typed something to that effect, that it could be spycraft, a trick of the light, tourists from the future, who knows. It is a common experience that people seem to have a lot of theories about without a clear consensus on the cause.

Aliens are us. We are aliens. Maybe they come from the sea? Smaller bodies from the compression at depths, no pigmentation from lack of Vitamin D exposure from the sun, large eyes to see in darker locations, no obvious need for auditory communications due to the lack of sound traveling in water, large heads to communicate in an almost ESP way with vibrations on a wave length unpercievable to the the human ear????? Who knows.

On a planet where we cannot even stand united as a singular race of people, news of a discovery of extraterrestrials would cause complete and utter chaos.

Nothing unites as much as a common enemy. The introduction of the green man will probably mean the end of sovereign countries and a global government will be formed because because 'we' would have to adress the issue 'together'. Maybe a bit similar to the position of the World Health Organisation in the Covid pandemic.

As much as I would like to believe that would happen, I fear it might turn into an arms race into different nations trying to acquire new technology from said extraterrestrials.
